Understanding Restorative Justice

Restorative justice includes both preventative and responsive practices.

Preventative restorative justice practices help build relationships, strengthen trust, establish shared values, support belonging, and create healthier group culture before conflict occurs. These practices may include circles, emotional check-ins, reflection prompts, relationship-building activities, classroom agreements, communication tools, and other structured practices that help people connect and understand one another.

Responsive justice restorative practices are used after conflict, harm, or disconnection has occurred. These practices help people identify what happened, who was affected, what needs have emerged, what accountability is needed, and what repair or next steps can help move the community forward. CircleUp bulk tools support both preventative and responsive restorative justice work in schools, classrooms, teams, nonprofits, counseling spaces, and organizations.

The CircleRestora Restorative Circles Design Guide helps facilitators design circles that are tailored to their own classroom, group, organization, or community. Unlike many resources that only provide pre-written circles, a design guide helps users understand how to structure a circle from start to finish, choose activities and prompts with purpose, and create an experience that feels cohesive rather than like disconnected activities. It also includes pre-planned circles that can be used, edited, or adapted.

What is a restorative justice design guide?

A restorative justice design guide, such as the CircleRestora Restorative Circles Design Guide, helps educators, facilitators, counselors, trainers, and community leaders design restorative circles and restorative learning experiences that are tailored to a specific classroom, group, organization, or community. Unlike many books, guides, and courses that mainly offer pre-written or pre-planned circles, a true design guide walks you through the process of structuring circles with intention, purpose, and flexibility.

The CircleRestora Restorative Circles Design Guide helps users choose activities, prompts, reflection questions, agreements, openings, closings, and facilitation steps that work together to create a cohesive circle experience. This matters because strong circles are not just a collection of unrelated activities. They are intentionally designed experiences that reflect the needs, goals, relationships, and context of the people participating.

CircleRestora Design Guide can be used to design preventative circles that build relationships, strengthen trust, support belonging, establish shared values, and create community before conflict happens. It can also be used to design responsive circles that support conflict resolution, accountability, repair, re-entry, reflection, and community healing after harm or disconnection has occurred. The guide includes pre-planned circles that can be used, edited, or modified, but its deeper value is that it teaches you how to build custom restorative circles that feel simple, powerful, relevant, and connected to your unique community.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is an approach to building community, preventing harm, responding to conflict, and repairing relationships in ways that center accountability, dignity, dialogue, and the needs of the people involved. In schools, classrooms, teams, organizations, and communities, restorative justice is not only used after conflict happens. It also includes preventative practices that help people build trust, strengthen relationships, improve communication, create shared values, and establish a stronger sense of belonging before harm or conflict occurs.

Preventative restorative practices may include relationship-building activities, community circles, emotional check-ins, classroom agreements, reflection prompts, group dialogue, communication tools, and other practices that help people know one another, understand expectations, and strengthen the relationships that make conflict less likely or easier to address when it does happen. Some restorative practices take place in a circle, while others do not. The goal is not simply to “hold circles,” but to create a culture where people have the skills, relationships, and shared values needed to communicate, reflect, repair harm, and move forward together.

Restorative justice also includes responsive practices used after conflict, harm, or disconnection has occurred. These practices help people assess what happened, who was affected, what needs have emerged, what responsibilities need to be taken, and what repair or next steps may be possible. Responsive restorative practices may include restorative conversations, conflict resolution processes, repair conversations, facilitated dialogue, re-entry conversations, accountability planning, and restorative circles. These practices are rooted in restorative justice values and principles, with attention to the people who were harmed, the people who caused harm, the surrounding community, and the solutions needed to address the situation in a meaningful and human-centered way.

Do you offer bulk SEL tools and emotional learning resources?

Yes. CircleUp offers bulk SEL tools, emotional learning resources, feeling wheels, emotion charts, emotional check-in tools, conversation cards, and reflection resources that help students, staff, teams, and participants name emotions, communicate needs, build relationships, and strengthen emotional awareness.

What is a feeling wheel?

A feeling wheel is a visual emotional literacy tool that helps people identify and name their emotions with more clarity. Instead of stopping at broad words like happy, sad, angry, or scared, a feeling wheel helps students, adults, teams, and participants find more specific emotion words such as frustrated, overwhelmed, disappointed, hopeful, proud, anxious, disconnected, grateful, or calm.

Feeling wheels are often used in SEL lessons, counseling sessions, restorative circles, conflict resolution conversations, mindfulness practices, staff trainings, DEI reflection, youth programs, and group facilitation. CircleUp offers feeling wheels and feeling wheel posters in bulk for schools, districts, nonprofits, counselors, teams, and organizations that want practical tools for emotional check-ins, reflection, communication, and community-building.
